How Goal Setting Helps To Navigate Challenges In The Workplace

On Tuesday, 13th July 2021, REGENT Connect once again hosted a successful webinar entitled Navigating the Challenges in the Workplace: Goal Setting. The webinar took place against the backdrop of riots and unrest in the country, and thus, the topic tended to generate deeper meaning for presenters and participants alike, namely that as a country, a society, South Africans must set Big Hairy Audacious Goals.

The line-up of professionals who addressed participants, alumni, students, and guests, included Ms. Cindy Norcott, a regular guest at our webinars. Cindy is a motivational speaker, business coach, and Chief Executive Officer of two highly successful, award-wining recruitment agencies, Pro-Appointments and Pro-Talent. She is also the author of the book How to be Unstoppable and the founder of the Robin Hood Foundation.

Of Goal setting, Cindy said: Goal setting is such an important process. Those who are successful, healthy, and happy didn’t end up there by accident. It is important to be intentional if we want to live our best lives. It is thus important to set goals that have a measurement and a deadline. Goals also need to excite us and be aligned to our values, otherwise, we are very unlikely to achieve them. To realise our goals, a public declaration is important, as we are then accountable to ourselves, our friends, peers, and loved ones. We also need to set goals that stretch us, otherwise, we are setting our sights too low. Goals give us direction. Having a direction gives us more motivation. When we are more motivated, we do more. The most important part is to create an action plan of how to make things happen.

Dr. Ridwaan Asvat, the Operations Director of REGENT BUSINESS SCHOOL, probed the discussion with questions about goal setting. Some of these included, ‘Why is it important to set goals?’ (Because it gives direction to your personal and career life); ‘What types of goals are there?’ (Personal, Health, Career, Education, any goal that is worth striving for); ‘How do I set SMART goals?’ (Make sure that they are Specific; Measurable; Achievable; Realistic; and Time-bound). These insights provided participants with the tools needed to set their own goals.

Finally, Ms. Corlia Nel, Executive and Leadership Coach, and Consulting Psychologist provided some insights into personal development to achieve Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals. She indicated that it is critical for individuals to understand their own strengths and weaknesses to achieve these goals.

Three lucky attendees won a Personal Development Analysis Assessment and Feedback session with Coach Corlia Nel, a psychologist working in association with Science of Change. Congratulations to Mzwandile-S Kamang, Kiloshnee Gedrim and Reynard Gerber.
