Course Overview

The purpose of the Higher Certificate in Project Management is to provide student with sound fundamental competencies required to work on projects of varying sizes and complexity as part of a project team.

The qualification offers a combination of project management theory and practice and is aimed at equipping individuals who work at first-line management level within organisations with the required knowledge and skills regarding project management, specifically, the intrinsic disciplines fundamental to project management (fundamentals, quality, resource management and risk), business management, communication and financial management.

Entrepreneurship is regarded as the cornerstone of economic growth in today’s business environment. In this highly competitive and complex arena, success takes more than passion alone. REGENT BUSINESS SCHOOL’s Higher Certificate in Entrepreneurship (HCIE) is a 1 year programme that provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to establish a new business and market a small business. It also provides a solid grounding in managing the finances of a small business and improving competency levels in accounting practices. In addition, the fundamentals of Business Communication and Management Principles will train entrepreneurs to be effective in their communication, leadership and management style. In a job market where retrenchment always threatens job security, this programme will equip graduates the skills needed to be an entrepreneur or business owner, with the analytical business tools and increased knowledge to develop and maintain a business.

The Higher Certificate in Entrepreneurship has been developed in response to the growing need to provide students with the necessary skills; or to further enhance their existing skills in establishing their own businesses thereby assisting in improving the economical landscape in Southern Africa. This programme will provide students with the opportunity to assume the responsibility, risk and rewards of starting and operating their own business. The Higher Certificate in Entrepreneurship offers students the opportunity to improve their business management skill set.

Objectives

  • Apply project management principles to efficiently manage and control project changes.
  • Apply a range of concepts, tools and techniques to effectively lead and manage projects.
  • Evaluate projects in terms of scope and costs
  • Apply fundamental project tools and techniques in the context of project management.
  • Utilise a range of project scheduling and resource management tools and techniques in the context of project management.
  • Apply various concepts, tools and techniques that can be used to effectively manage project quality and risks.

Course details

The minimum duration of the programme is 1 year. A student may register for a maximum of 3 modules per semester. However, a student may register for 4 modules in a semester, provided that at least one of the modules is being attempted for a second time.

Course structure and modules

Duration: 1 year
The programme comprises six modules. Students attempt three modules per semester.

Modules

Semester 1 :

  • Leading and Managing Projects   
  • Project Monitoring and Change Control
  • Project Costing and Budgeting

Semester 2 :

  • Fundamentals of Project Management
  • Project Scheduling and Resource Management
  • Project Quality and Risk Management

Leading and Managing Projects Upon completion of this module, the student should be able to:

  • Discuss the various theories of leadership and management as they are applied to projects
  • Identify and explain sources of conflict within project teams
  • Describe the criteria required for project team effectiveness
  • Explain the significance of project meetings and reports in improving efficiency
  • Discuss the role of the project manager
  • Communicate performance results in accordance with project procedures
  • Apply corrective actions to ensure compliance to the project management plan
  • Recognize opportunities in support of project objectives

Upon completion of this module, the student should be able:

  • Apply the core principles of project management, including implementation, monitoring and control.
  • Use the common vocabulary and jargon of the project management profession in the correct context.
  • Explain the project selection procedure and how numerous projects fit into an organisations program and the strategic path.
  • Describe the organisational and behavioural aspects of project management.
  • Apply project management areas of competency to projects of varying sizes and complexity.
  • Develop integrated project plans including the project charter, statement of work (SOW), work breakdown structure (WBS), project activity network diagram (critical path), project schedule and milestones, project budget, and cost-time performance tracking measures for a range of projects.

Entry requirements

The minimum entrance requirements for admission to the Higher Certificate in Project Management programme are as follows:

  • A National Senior Certificate with a minimum Higher Certificate endorsement
  •  any other NQF 4 Qualification or Equivalent

Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for admission to the Higher Certificate programme, but have the relevant work experience, may apply for admission via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).  REGENT Business School reserves the right to conduct an assessment to determine the level of prior learning.
