REGENT BUSINESS SCHOOL’s Enterprise Development Hub (redHUB) hosted an informative webinar, titled ‘Igniting SMMES as Engines Of Economic Growth’ on Tuesday 17 November 2020 at 11h00. The webinar focused on the role of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in terms of stimulating economic growth in the current South African context.

The dynamic panelists Mr. Ebrahim Patel, Director of SiyaXoxa Technologies and founder of the Minara Chamber of Commerce and Ms Busisiwe Radebe economist with the Nedbank Group, expounded on the inter play between macro and micro economic factors influencing economic growth.

Whilst Ms Radebe focused mainly on the macroeconomic factors relating to the many challenges facing small business, she emphasised the important role small businesses play in stimulating the economy – focusing on innovation, hardwork and determination as the corner stone of success. Ms Radebe also inferred the need for small businesses to consider imitation but not at the expense of innovation.  Her discussion was complemented by Mr. Patel’s micro approach to small businesses and their role in an economy. He stressed the importance of SMMEs as a vital component of an economy in terms of job creation and enabling inclusive growth.

In addition, there was considerable discussion on the two economies in South Africa – referring to the formal and informal sectors.
