New degree pathway addresses critical skills gap as digital competencies
become essential in finance sector.
Regent Business School has introduced a BCom in Accounting (Business Intelligence), positioning itself as the first South African business school to offer this specialised degree pathway. The three-year programme, launching in 2026, is designed to equip mid-tier accounting and finance professionals with the digital and analytical capabilities that industry leaders now consider indispensable.
The qualification responds directly to a rapidly changing financial landscape where traditional accounting expertise alone is no longer sufficient. With businesses across all sectors demanding professionals who can bridge operational and strategic management functions, the programme develops students who are as comfortable with data analytics and contemporary accounting software as they are with financial statements and audit procedures.
“The future of accounting hinges on professionals who can leverage technology for data analysis and strategic decision-making”, says Zahraa Paruk-Abdulla, Academic Head of School of Finance and Accounting at Regent Business School and a qualified CA(SA). “Industry entities and professional bodies have made it clear: digital acumen and business intelligence competencies are no longer optional. They are among the most sought-after skills in graduates today. This programme ensures our students enter the workforce not just qualified but prepared for the realities of modern finance.”
The BCom in Accounting (Business Intelligence) combines rigorous accounting fundamentals with modules specifically designed to instil strong digital capabilities. Students gain proficiency in information systems, data analysis and contemporary accounting software whilst maintaining the comprehensive grounding in financial accounting, auditing, taxation and management accounting that defines quality accounting education.
The programme structure reflects this dual focus. Year one establishes foundational knowledge across financial accounting, economics, business mathematics and digital literacy. In year two, students progress to advanced modules including Business Intelligence, Accounting Information Systems, and Management Accounting and Finance. The final year integrates these disciplines, producing graduates with both the AGA(SA) endorsement and the technical prowess to drive strategic decision-making.
Career prospects for graduates span traditional and emerging roles within the finance sector. Beyond conventional positions such as accountant, auditor or financial manager, the programme prepares students for contemporary roles including data analyst, financial crime risk manager and business intelligence specialist. AGA(SA) is a technical accounting and business designation that transforms mid-tier accountants into highly skilled professionals who can integrate strategic and tactical financial operations with ease.
Regent Business School has structured the qualification as a contact learning course with a student-focused approach, enabling working professionals to pursue the degree without compromising their current employment. Admission requires an “E” symbol in Mathematics and Bachelor’s Degree endorsement, though Recognition of Prior Learning provisions exist for candidates with relevant work experience.
The programme carries full AGA(SA) endorsement and DHET certification, with SAQA ID 90913. It comprises 360 credits at NQF Level 7, delivered across six campuses by the School of Accounting & Finance.
As businesses demand professionals who can transform financial data into strategic insights, Regent Business School’s BCom in Accounting (Business Intelligence) positions graduates at the intersection of traditional accounting rigour and digital innovation.
