Getting your matric results can feel confusing. Many learners see their marks but don’t fully understand what matric pass means or what they can study next.

In South Africa, matric is not a single standard. There are various matric pass levels South Africa, each unlocking different opportunities.

This guide simplifies matric results. We’ll explain Higher Certificate, Diploma, and Bachelor’s passes, outline subject criteria, and show your study options after matric.

What marks do you need to pass matric in South Africa?

In order to get a matric pass, also known as an NSC pass, you must meet the minimum requirements set by the Department of Basic Education.
You must write at least 7 subjects, including life orientation.

To pass matric at all, you need to:

  • Pass at least 6 of your 7 subjects
  • Get at least 40% in Home Language
  • Get at least 30% in two other subjects
  • Get at least 30% in three additional subjects
  • Pass Life Orientation (but it does not count toward APS)

So does this mean you can study further?

No, not necessarily.

  • Passing matric doesn’t qualify you for university
  • Your pass level determines your study options
  • Your APS score further filters what you can apply for

In other words, two learners can both “pass matric” but qualify for completely different study options based on their subjects and marks.

Let’s have a deeper look at the marks you need to qualify for different qualifications.

What are the levels of matric results?

There are three main matric pass levels in South Africa. Each level has different subject and mark requirements. They also allow you to study different types of qualifications.

Higher Certificate Pass

A higher certificate pass is the entry-level matric pass.

Higher Certificate pass requirements include:

  • 40% in Home Language
  • 30% in two other subjects
  • 30% in three additional subjects
  • Pass 6 of 7 subjects

This pass allows you to study higher certificate programmes at institutions such as a TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) college or private colleges.

Diploma Pass

A Diploma pass allows you to study diploma qualifications.

Diploma pass requirements include:

  • 40% in Home Language
  • 40% in three other subjects
  • 30% in two additional subjects
  • Pass 6 of 7 subjects

This pass level gives you access to diploma studies, depending on your APS score and the subjects you passed, such as life science or other high-credit subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree Pass

A Bachelor’s pass is the highest matric pass level.

Bachelor’s pass requirements include:

  • 40% home language
  • 50% in four subjects
  • 30% in two additional subjects

This pass allows you to apply to a university to achieve a bachelor’s degree, depending on your APS score and subject choices.

How do APS scores work?

Universities and colleges use your APS score (Admission Point Score) to decide who gets accepted into a course. Even if you meet the correct matric pass level, your APS score still matters.

Your APS score is calculated using your best subjects, usually excluding life orientation. Each subject earns points based on your final percentage. The higher your marks, the higher your APS score.

For example:

  • 70% or more = high points
  • 50–59% = medium points
  • 30–39% = lower points

Each course has a minimum APS score. A Bachelor’s pass does not guarantee admission if your APS score is too low. This is why two learners with the same pass level can receive different outcomes.

Always check:

  • Required subjects
  • Minimum APS score
  • Course-specific rules

Your APS score plays a key role in your study options after matric.

How do subject requirements affect your pass level?

Your pass level depends not only on marks but also on which subjects you passed. Subjects such as math, life science, accounting, and physical sciences are considered high-credit subjects.

Even if your marks are high, missing the correct subjects can limit your options. This is why learners with similar marks may qualify for different pass levels and different study paths.

Can you go to university with a Higher Certificate pass?

Yes, you can study for a Higher Certificate with this level pass. Universities, private colleges, and TVET colleges offer these programmes.

A higher certificate is often used as a stepping stone. Many students start with a higher certificate, then move on to a diploma, and later apply to study a degree at university once they meet the requirements.

So while a Higher Certificate pass may not give you direct access to a degree, it still gives you access to further studies and keeps the door to university open.

Can I upgrade my matric results to get a Bachelor’s Pass?

Yes, you can improve your results after matric. Learners may rewrite certain subjects through matric exams to improve marks or meet bachelor’s pass requirements.

You don’t always need to rewrite all subjects. Many students upgrade only the subjects affecting their APS score. This is a common path for learners who want better study options after matric.

FAQ

Is every matric certificate NQF Level 4?

Yes. All National Senior Certificates (NSC) are classified as NQF Level 4 in the NQF levels of South Africa. This is true whether you achieved a higher certificate pass, diploma pass, or bachelor’s pass. Your NQF level stays the same, but your pass level determines your study options after matric.

Can I improve my pass level after matric?

Yes, you can. Many learners improve their matric results after school. You can rewrite certain subjects through official matric exams to meet higher pass requirements.

For example:

  • Upgrade from a higher certificate pass to a diploma pass
  • Improve marks to meet bachelor’s pass requirements
  • Increase your APS score for better study options

This is a common and accepted pathway in South Africa.

Can I rewrite only certain subjects?

Yes. You don’t need to rewrite all your subjects. Most learners choose to rewrite only the subjects that affect their pass level or APS score.

This often includes:

  • Home language (to reach 40 for your home language)
  • Maths or maths literacy
  • A high credit subject like accounting or life science

This saves time and helps you focus on what really matters.

What happens if I fail one subject?

Failing one subject does not always mean you failed matric. If you still meet the minimum requirements, you may qualify for a lower pass level. If the failed subject affects your pass level, you can:

  • Rewrite the subject
  • Apply for a higher certificate or bridging programme
  • Study at a TVET college or private institution

Does life orientation count for university admission?

You must pass life orientation, but it does not count toward your APS score. This means strong marks in life orientation cannot make up for low marks in other subjects.

Your further education options with REGENT

If your matric results did not give you a Bachelor’s pass, you still have strong study options. REGENT offers recognised higher education pathways designed to help students move forward.

With a Higher Certificate pass, you can apply for programmes like the REGENT’s various Higher Certificate qualifications, which allows you to build foundational skills and gain access to further study. From there, many students progress to diploma and degree qualifications over time.

REGENT’s undergraduate programmes are aligned with NQF levels South Africa and are ideal for students who want a clear, structured path after matric.
